Utagawa Hiroshige, First Work of His Later Years, 1856 (Ansei 3)
Mount Fuji towers against a clear winter sky, and a boat loaded with the first shipments of the year sails up the Nihonbashi River toward the fish market. Wholesalers and warehouses line both banks, the fish market is bustling with activity, and a feudal lord's procession can be seen to the left of Nihonbashi Bridge, which crosses the center. The snow-covered Nihonbashi bridge evokes a sense of auspiciousness for the New Year.
